President Obama announced the nation’s first comprehensive strategy to prevent and end homelessness, including a focus on homeless Veterans. The report, Opening Doors: Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness, puts the country on a path to end Veterans and chronic homelessness by 2015; and to ending homelessness among children, family, and youth by 2020.

According to VHA Handbook 1173.06, updated and released January 15, 2008, a veteran is eligible to receive an everyday (or commercial-source) wheelchair as well as a spare wheelchair. These chairs may be manual, motorized, pushrim-activated, enhanced function, or scooters.
