Tom Brokaw Praises Ralph Braun and His Book "Rise Above"

Fifty years ago he was a young man in a wheelchair who needed to get to work. Today Ralph Braun is CEO of BraunAbility, the largest manufacturer of wheelchair accessible vehicles in the world. Capitalizing on the age-old saying, “Necessity is the mother of invention,” Braun refused to let his disability hold him back, and in the process, brought independence and mobility to millions. Rise Above tells the story of how self-reliance, common sense, and a refusal to accept the status quo led to one man's triumph in business and in life.
 
Journalism icon Tom Brokaw had this to say: “This is a wonderful story of how one man’s disability and ingenuity led to a better life for those unable to walk — especially military veterans. Ralph Braun found another way to serve his country.”

This is high praise from a man who spent much of his career documenting the contributions of America’s “Greatest Generaton” - those  who grew up during the deprivation of the Great Depression and went on to fight in World War II and help rebuild the nation in the years that followed. Ralph Braun’s parents were two members of that generation, and their values of hard work and determination were instilled in Ralph at an early age.

As Brokaw notes in his endorsement, BraunAbility has been essential to restoring the independence of our military veterans who were injured in the line of duty. Ralph pays tribute to our country’s veterans — some of our earliest customers — throughout the book. Here’s an excerpt from the prologue:

“…I dream I can be an encouragement to our wounded veterans, for they are heroes to me. I have been to dozens of Veterans Affairs hospitals over the years and have countless friends and customers who are wounded veterans. They touch my heart and inspire me in my own life. Because of my muscular dystrophy, I was never able to serve alongside them, but I’d like to think that in my own way, I’ve been serving alongside them all these years with my products and services. Long after I’m gone, I know my company will still be serving them.”
