Both service-connected and non-service connected veterans may be eligible for reimbursement from the Veterans Administration for an accessible vehicle. However, it does take a little bit of work, a little bit of research and a little bit of patience.
If you are a veteran or the next-of-kin to a veteran, and have absolutely no idea where to go or what to do, please give us a call at 800-225-7361. We've been dealing with the VA for more than 20 years, and have an excellent understanding of the requirements necessary to receive VA reimbursement for an accessible wheelchair van.
Here are a list of links to navigate to the VA and hopefully get you closer to finding the resolutions you need and the assistance for a wheelchair accessible van:
However, the key to any of this moving forward is the veteran being able to get a hold of their DD214, also known as the "Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty." Sometimes that is far easier said than done, so Greg Hollis, one of our adaptive equipment specialists who recently attended the Tri-Counties I ndependent Living show in Eureka, found out that there is a sweet little link to get veterans or their next-of-kin in touch with their DD214s:
Request Copies of Veterans' Records
You have to either be the veteran or the next of kin (surviving spouse not remarried, father, mother, son, daughter, sister or brother) of a deceased former member of the military. There are some very specific questions asked, so you will need to have necessary personal identification.
